Advanced air quality warning system for Delhi | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: Various institutions under the ministry of earth sciences, including India Meteorological Department (IMD) and IITM, Pune, have jointly operationalised advanced high-resolution ‘air quality early warning system’ for the national capital and a separate improved system for cities like Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi which face high air pollution.
The advanced version of the system for Delhi will now be able to identify air pollution hotspots and pollution levels down to the street level.
Track the pollution level in your city
Under the separate system, air quality forecast for Lucknow, Kanpur and Varanasi will be available at 2 km resolution while it will be available for other cities at 10 km resolution. The new system will reduce uncertainty in forecast.
The advanced system has incorporated various changes in its existing ‘Air Quality Forecast Models’ such as improved emission inventories, land use and land cover and improved assimilation of various observational data.
“The air quality forecast model ‘System for Integrated Modelling of Atmospheric Composition’ (SILAM) for India has been further improved by implementing global emission inventories,” said the ministry of earth sciences (MoES) in a statement on Wednesday.
