Teenager dies as water tanker hits 2-wheeler in South Delhi | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: An 18-year-old girl was killed after a water tanker hit her scooter on BRT Road in south Delhi on Tuesday evening. The driver of the tanker was arrested on Wednesday.
The victim, who was preparing to join college after clearing her Class XII examinations this year, lived in south Delhi’s Hauz Rani with her family. Around 5pm, the girl, identified as Nabila, was going along with her father Abdul Sattar, a 52-year-old carpenter, towards Chirag Dilli when the tanker, which was operating under contract with Delhi Jal Board, hit the scooter.
Sattar said that when they were near a petrol pump, the water tanker, which was allegedly speeding, hit their scooter from behind. Both of them lost balance and fell off the two-wheeler. The girl sustained critical injuries on her head. Sattar rushed her to the nearby Max Hospital in Saket with the help of passersby, but she died during the treatment.
Deputy commissioner of police (south) Atul Thakur said the Ambedkar Nagar police station had received a call reporting the death due to an accident. A police team was sent to the hospital which recorded Sattar’s statement, based on which a case of causing death due to negligence was registered and a search for the tanker driver was launched.
“A team also inspected the accident spot. We identified the driver as Kapil, a 40-year-old resident of Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh. He was arrested following a raid on Wednesday and the tanker was seized,” he said.
The DCP said a medical examination had found that the accused driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. “The CCTV footage collected from nearby areas are being checked to establish the sequence of the incident,” DCP Thakur added.
